AllAboutJazz-New York SEPTEMBER 2005 Issue NOW AVAILABLE!

Dear jazz community at large:

AllAboutJazz-New York's September 2005 issue (no.41) is now readily available at your favorite record stores and jazz clubs throughout New York City, as well as online at:
http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/news.php?id=7036
(or simply go to our homepage link at www.allaboutjazz.com/newyork)

So much to celebrate this month, though we certainly shouldn't forget those who have recently passed, this year being heavy in that department (already) - two legends in Lucky Thompson (see Lest We Forget) and Albert Mangelsdorff (see In Memoriam Tribute) recently left us their legacies. In addition, our well wishes go out to Shirley Horn and Michael Brecker, both who are ailing.

In the meantime, enjoy our "Drummer Issue", as we present to you three distinct stylists - Paul Motian (Cover Story), Louis Hayes (Interview Feature) and John Hollenbeck (Artist Feature), all of whom perform this month in our fair jazz metropolis.

*(On the Cover: "PAUL MOTIAN: Sound in Motian" by Russ Musto; photos by Jack Vartoogian) It was while with Tony Scott and George Russell that Motian got his first experience playing with pianist Bill Evans. In '56, the drummer appeared on Evans' debut date as a leader, but it wasn't until the two started working together with bassist Scott LaFaro a couple of years later that they began earning widespread recognition, making several recordings which had a marked influence on legions of jazz piano trios. This month the 74-year old jazz veteran plays with Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell, a trio of different sorts and instrumentation that has remained together for over 20 years; they'll be at the Village Vanguard for their now annual 2-week long residency of sure to be sold-out performances.

*(Interview Feature: LOUIS HAYES. Interview by Marcia Hillman; photo by Scott Friedlander) Influenced by Philly Joe Jones and mentored by Papa Jo Jones, the 68-year old drummer Hayes is a jazz survivor and a swinging one at that. The one-time Detroit musician grew up listening to and eventually playing with such legendary performers as Yusef Lateef, Sam Jones, Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan and so many others from that prosperous golden age of jazz in the Motor City. This month at Smoke, Hayes plays in a surprisingly unique - to his extensive career - drums/bass/sax trio.

*(Artist Feature: JOHN HOLLENBECK. By Chris DiGirolamo. Photo by Paul La Raia.) To take on the labels "composer", "drummer", "percussionist",
and "bandleader" means being a busy man for Hollenbeck. Maintaining his composition practices while leading the Claudia Quintet and his Large Ensemble, Hollenbeck this year alone has also toured and/or will soon be touring with vocalist Meredith Monk, Fred Hersch, Jazz Big Band Graz, Bob Brookmeyer, and others. This month, he celebrates his new CD release ('Semi-Formal', Cuneiform) at Cornelia St.Cafe with his Claudia Quintet.

*(Record Label Spotlight: ESP-DISK'. By Clifford Allen) Though there are currently too many independent productions to count releasing improvised music, there were far fewer choices - even among indies - 40 years ago. In terms of the jazz vanguard of the postbop era, an independent production and distribution system was necessary to get this new music to the public. If you were playing avant garde jazz in New York in '65, Bernard Stollman was your man and his ESP-Disk' was your label. The ESP operations are once again officially back in full swing, so expect a bevy of historic reissues as well as new recordings.

*(Club Profile: THE GARAGE. By Andy Velez) The Garage is a restaurant-
cum-music spot on 7th Avenue South and Sheridan Square, in the heart of a bustling, multi-cultural part of the West Village. Slightly more than a decade ago it was opened by its owners who soon thereafter added music (with no cover!) to their menu. The excellent saxophonist Virginia Mayhew, the NYU Big Band, and ex-Sun Ra and one-time Stanley Cowell/Charles Tolliver drummer Clifford Barbaro are scheduled to perform there this month.

*(Encore: JACQUES COURSIL. By Andrey Henkin) Since Henry Grimes' resurfacing, the bar has been raised for dramatic stories of life away from music. During the summer, trumpeter Coursil released a new record, his first since 1969. Prior to recording 'Minimal Brass' (Tzadik Records), his last sessions were his first two as a leader close to 40 years prior: 'Black Suite' with Anthony Braxton and Burton Greene, and 'The Way Ahead', two entries into the BYG-Actuel catalogue which were some of the label's strongest.

*(Megaphone by ETHAN IVERSON) This month's musicians-in-their-own-
words column features the words and thoughts of The Bad Plus pianist/keyboardist Ethan Iverson who tributes various musicians he's seen and heard perform live since moving to NYC in the early '90s from Wisconsin. (Iverson and The Bad Plus play the Village Vanguard this month).

*(On This Day by Andrey Henkin) - Each month we feature 5 jazz recordings all recorded on the very same day of different years, each representative of a different decade of the music. Could you believe that all these great sessions were recorded on September 30th?!...ERNIE HENRY's 'Seven Standards and a Blues' (Riverside-
OJC,1957); JOHN COLTRANE's 'Live in Seattle' (Impulse!,1965); LEE KONITZ' 'Satori' (Milestone-OJC,1974); THE FRINGE's 'Live!' (Ap Gu Ga,1980); CARLOS GARNETT's 'Fuego en mi Alma' (HighNote,1996). Read and listen on to get a little preview into these recordings you may or may not be familiar with!...

ALSO:
-(Special Feature: "CELEBRATING JOHN COLTRANE". By Terrell Holmes) Coltrane was a constant sojourner...throughout this month, jazz luminaries will gather at venues around the city (Birdland, Cornelia St.Cafe, the Stone, Sista's Place, etc.) to play homage to the life and music of this singular man, augmented by the release of two recently discovered landmark live performances: one with Thelonious Monk ('At Carnegie Hall', Blue Note), the other with his classic quartet ('One Down, One Up: Live at the Half Note', Verve).

-(Lest We Forget: LUCKY THOMPSON. By Donald Elfman) -  The end of July saw the passing of one of the most brilliant yet also most enigmatic of all saxophonists. Another gone-but not forgotten musician of yesteryear, Eli "Lucky" Thompson (1924-2005) passed away in Seattle after a long illness at the age of 81.

-(Festival Report) With the unofficial beginning of concert hall season comes the creeping end of jazz festival season. This issue we cover three: CARAMOOR JAZZ FESTIVAL, New York (by David Adler); the NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL, Rhode Island (by Ken Franckling); and the JAZZ EM AGOSTO, Lisbo, Portugal (by Kurt Gottschalk).

-(Listen Up!) - Each month we turn our focus to two of the countless musicians whom we feel are worth hearing but unfortunately are, generally speaking, unknown entities to the average jazz listener due to their lack of high profile public performances or recordings whether as a side(wo)man or leader. This month's installment: vocalist/jazz beat box artist NAPOLEON MADDOX, and saxist STACY DILLARD.

-(VOX News) New York City-based writer/journalist, jazz singer, composer, and lyricist Tessa Souter keeps close tabs on what's happening, what's happened, and what's going to be happening in the jazz vocal scene, particularly here in NYC. From reviewing the previous month's highlighted CD releases and live appearances to offering a preview into the month ahead - VOX News is an indispensable resource and guide for any fan of vocal jazz.

-(NY@Night by David Adler, Laurence Donohue-Greene, Andrey Henkin, and Russ Musto) - We continue to keep close tabs on the haps around the city from the previous month's highlight gigs and events with concert reviews from our busiest monthly writers and concert-goers. Overviewed are late-July and August appearances by: STICKS AND STONES (Matana Roberts/Chad Taylor/Josh Abrams) at the Stone; DAVE DOUGLAS and KNEEBODY (with Shane Endsley) at Tonic as part of the Festival of New Trumpet; LOUIS BELOGENIS and JOE GIARDULLO, et.al. at CBGB's Sunday Freestyle Avant Jazz Lounge Series closing concert; LEE KONITZ NEW NONET at Jazz Standard; DANILO PEREZ' trio at Madison Square Park; DAVID HAZELTINE's Venus Trio at Smoke; CACHAO at Blue Note; and SLIDE HAMPTON at Village Vanguard.

-(Event Calendar) One of NYC's most valuable jazz resources can be found each month within our ever-expanding Event Calendar section and Club Directory pages. Our 'Recommended Show' selections each night help serve as roadmaps for the indecisive and the overwhelmed alike! September continues one of the great New York traditions: jazz shows each and every night, and plenty of them. Sometimes it's not a matter of what shows you make, but what you as a consequence will inevitably be missing!

-(Recommended New Releases) Of the 18 discs we specifically suggest you go out and fetch immediately, selected this month are DYLAN VAN DER SCHYFF's 'The Definition of a Toy' (Songlines), MICHAEL BLAKE's 'Right Before Your Very Ears' (Clean Feed), STRING TRIO OF NEW YORK's 'Frozen Ropes (with Oliver Lake)' (Barking Hoop), and JESSICA WILLIAMS' 'Live at Yoshi's, Volume Two' (MAXJAZZ).

-(Birthdays) Our Sept. b-day of the month is that of the great alto saxophonist, composer and bandleader OLIVER LAKE, who comes to NYC in September with his big band featuring John Hicks for three nights at Jazz Gallery.

-(In Memoriam): Guitarist BILLY BEAN died June 17th at age 89; bassist KETER BETTS died at 77 on Aug.6th; pianist FRANCY BOLAND passed away Aug.12th at age 75; beloved Cuban vocalist IBRAHIM FERRER died Aug.6th aged 78; trumpeter CHRIS GRIFFIN on June 18th died at 89; bassist AL MCKIBBON passed on July 29th, age 86; altoist DALE NORRIS died, aged 68, on June 28th; Texas tenorman BILLY ROBINSON died at 86 on Aug.11th; pianist TOM TALBERT on July 2nd died at 80; saxophonist LUCKY THOMPSON died at 81 on July 20th. We invite you to read our obituaries on each to pay your respects.

-(In Memoriam Tribute: ALBERT MANGELSDORFF) Mangelsdorff was a singular artist who will unfortunately not get the credit he was so do. There never appeared an obituary of the legendary and pioneering multi-phonic trombonist in the NY Times, nor are any extensive obituaries expected within most jazz publications sadly! We've tried our best to compensate for this Stateside lack of proper attention given to a legend after his passing, not to mention during his lifetime. Read recollections and sentiments written by many of his frequent collaborators such as Gunter Hampel, Wolfgang Dauner, John Lindberg, Fred van Hove, John Surman, Willem Breuker, Eberhard Weber, Barre Phillips, and George Lewis.

The music lives on, and if you're not in New York City, we hope to serve as an impetus to come on out and share in the ongoing nightly barrage of jazz and improvisational music. Our efforts of being THE resource, and continuous reminder, of what you're missing each and every evening should be taken advantage of, so have a good read, keep your ears open to the music and if you are in New York, hope to see you at the shows!

All the best and nothing but.

The Fall Season Approaches

Greetings everyone!

A wonderful coolness permeates the air; Fall has returned.  In preparations for the upcoming holiday season, I’m happy to announce the progress of one party event and the launching of another.  I hope you find them worth attending and encourage you to join us in the fun.

RHYTHM SUNDAYS:  In all my promotion career I have never seen so many Sunday party events springing up in New York.  It’s incredible.  I can’t turn around without hearing about another Sunday party launch for the “grown and sexy,” “mature and eclectic” or any other myriad of descriptions.  Nevertheless, I’m proud to announce that despite the deluge of Sunday events going on, we at Rhythm Sundays are slowly but surely building up our numbers of happy partygoers and establishing a new crew of Sunday regulars.

I wasn’t too sure if we’d make it for a while there but each week we add another happy dancer to the fold and folks who were only planning to hang out for and hour or so are ending up dancing the night away.  Many thanks to all who have provided the intense energy, called friends and told them to join in and continue to give our parties the word of mouth approval it needs to grow.  Folks are feeling the party, loving the space and I hope those of you who haven’t been make a visit to us soon.

This Sunday I’ll have special TONI BRAXTON cd giveaways courtesy of Fly-Life Entertainment.  Also, special guest dj CAMERON of Melodies joins us while celebrating his birthday weekend.

UNITY 2005 – THE LEGEND CONTINUES:  In their day they were the most impressive party events in New York for our community and it’s been some time since the guys have gotten together to do it again.  Somewhat prompted by the passing of our beloved contemporary Mike Stone and further prompted by the general need for large-scale party events, we’ve come together again to bring you UNITY 2005 every Friday night at Octagon beginning October 7.  While we’re still working on getting the top floor opened and running, we’ll focus on Hip Hop and R&B on the main floor and offer Tribal House in the Lounge.  Expect top notch entertainment to follow through in the upcoming months.  Don’t be left out, Friday nights at Octagon are going to be BIG!!.   All the cuties will be there to represent so do come and check it out.  From the guys that gave you Unity at the Roxy, Twilo and the original Shelter, Unity lives again.  We look forward to seeing you there next Friday at Octagon.

Tishman Speyer, co-owners of Rockefeller Center has announced the upcoming reopening of the Top of The Rock observatory located atop 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Scheduled for November 1, 2005 this much anticipated event returns a lost treasure to New York City residents and provides visitors with an unparalleled view of the city's layout, and the beauty and grandeur of its diverse architecture that can best be seen from this bird's eye view.

Originally opened in 1931 as part of John D. Rockefeller's dream to provide a panoramic view of the City, the observation deck has been closed to the public for twenty years. Now newly renovated by the architectural firm of Gabellini Associates LLP, Top of The Rock now boasts a balance of restored 20th century architectural details and 21st Century technological advancements.

To reach what is destined to, once again, become a prized New York City attraction, Start with the interactive display located on the mezzanine level for information on the history of the Rockefeller Center complex. From there, step inside the sky shuttle elevators created to resemble time capsules. While soaring to your 67th floor destination 850 feet above ground, you'll pass beams of blue lights that represent the decades, which have passed since the 1933 building of Rockefeller Center. The elevators' translucent panels are used as projection screens to show retro footage of Rockefeller Center. Upon reaching your destination, you'll step out onto the "grand Viewing Room" where the north and south views of the City are dramatic. The Weather Room, a completely enclosed, triple height square that overlooks the plaza provides additional views and protects viewers from the elements. If you are looking to turn dramatic into spectacular, take the elevator to the grand viewing Decks on the 69th floor where views (ranging as far as 80 miles on a clear day) will take your breath away. For the ultimate experience don't miss the 360 views from the 70th floor. Space on the 70th floor is not as ample but the totally open air space gives you a feeling of being on top of the world.

Top of the Rock will be accessible daily from 8:30 A.M. to midnight. Ticket prices are $14.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors and $9.00 for children 6-11 years old. Tickets are now on sale on line at
http://www.topoftherocknyc.com. To avoid long waiting lines, tickets are being sold for specific dates and specific times.

In Our Neighborhood

Columbus Circle has witnessed several transformations but none more dramatic than the rapid metamorphoses that have occurred over the past two years. The construction of the Time Warner complex on land that once supported the New York Coliseum, New York City's primary trade and exposition venue prior to the Javits Center, marked the area destined for success. Several celebrity chefs and high-end retailers lost little time in signing up for this much sought after space and together have created a west side Mecca for dinners, shoppers and the simply curious. The traffic circle has been reconfigured to permit better flow of traffic that flows past this popular intersection connecting east with west and midtown with uptown.

Two Columbus Circle, the massive quasi modern
structure, which sits on Columbus Circle has for
years been the center of controversy among
preservationists seeking to establish landmark
status. A construction permit issued in late June
to the Museum of Art and Design puts an end to
this battle. In preparation for this new tenant, the
building will undergo extensive renovations including, total demolition of the interior and
reclading the exterior. Upon completion in mid 2007 this building, which has remained vacant for many years and is in serious disrepair, will once again service the community as a cultural venue.

A New Home for Alvin Ailey
The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater company founded in 1958 by director and principal dancer, Alvin Ailey has risen from a small group of black dancers who drove themselves from city to city to become one of the most respected dance companies in the world. By 1960 Ailey had choreographed his classic masterpiece "Revelations" and had become the resident company of the 51st Street YWCA. Continued successes in
Philadelphia, Chicago and overseas in the early 1960s placed the company on an accelerated track for an explosive future. Throughout the past 30 years they have been the subject of television and stage performances and recipients of the UN Peace Medal, Kennedy Center Honor, Handel Medallion and countless other well deserved awards of recognition. They have circled the globe doing public and private performances including, presidential inaugurations and Olympic ceremonies. The talent, style and choreography of now legendary Alvin Ailey are revered worldwide.

Growing rapidly in size, popularity and repertoire the dance company has needed to move every few years, constantly seeking more adequate space. From Manhattan to Brooklyn's Academy of Music back to Manhattan and from east side to west side, each move accommodated another expansion in the company, which today includes several traveling performance troupes, dance schools, dance camps and children's programs. With the recent opening of its new 75,000 square foot complex on 55th Street and Ninth Avenue, the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater celebrates a new chapter in the history of this formidable force within the world of dance.

Octagon Beats in Brooklyn - REVISED

Last Sunday

So it’s Sunday night and we’re all hanging out at the club getting our dance on, partying and such (mind you, we haven’t packed the place yet, but a nice crowd just the same.  Funny how so many folks come out so late when they have to work early the next day.  I don’t get it, but anyways…).  We’re all getting off on the classics and underground vocals when, just for the sake of novelty, I decide to change the beat around a bit  and decided to let the kids have it old school Octagon style.  I proceeded to throw down some of those tunes that made Octagon legendary:  A Masterblaster here, a “Fly Life” there, backed it up with “Higher,” and a few choice tribal tunes.

I finished off the set with “Love Is the Message” and, oh my gosh, what just happened here!  Folks were in a frenzy, kids falling on the floor, making dance circles, screaming and hollering.  The kids were doing shows.  Even the die-hard classics fans were sweating like crazy.  I couldn’t believe my eyes.  Someone later came up and told me he hadn’t heard those tunes in a minute and nobody’s giving them any homage.  “We want the old Fred Pierce from Octagon back” was what I heard.  Well, well, lookie here!

That Sunday brought about some realization and revelation to me.  Four years ago when I started Rhythm Sundays at 667, we were the only Sunday classics show in town.  No one else was offering that kind of vibe in Brooklyn.  Now there’s at least three parties doing it and even a few more in Manhattan.  But no one’s giving you good ole beats and tracks anymore.  Surely you may be able to get it at some of the big Manhattan parties (Allegria and Roxy come to mind).  But (and, yes, I’m tooting my horn here,) can’t nobody give a good Octagon beat like the original Octagon dj!

So for all you guys who long for a harder edge to your songs and little more umph to your beat, long no more.  While you still can enjoy your favorite classics, gospel house and vocals , we’ll also feature a very healthy portion of BEATS.  And join Calvin upstairs for a healthy dose of hip hop and r&b.  Come to think of it, that would be very much like the original Octagon format, house music downstairs, hip hop upstairs and now with an additional feature of an outdoor patio. Work!!

So, if you need a good BEAT to throw your back out,

If you need the music to take you “HIGHER”

If you need some “FLY” in your “LIFE”

Then come check us out this Sunday.

The Cattyshack is one block away from the N, R and W trains at Union St.  It’s about 10 blocks or so down from the 4th Ave., Flatbush and Atlantic Avenue intersections.  I’ve found there’s lots more parking on the streets along the west side of 4th Avenue than on the east side (off the right side of 4th Ave. if you’re coming from the direction of the Bridges).

Last but not least, a big shout out and thank you to all the New Jersey/Albert’s heads who came all the way from across the Hudson to hang out and represent last Sunday.  You really made the party.

Speaking of Albert’s, it’s now called Gallery and the party that’s held there, ZION, will start again this Saturday.  The promoter wanted me to let you know that the dancefloor has reopened, Jersey’s back on the map with a new Latino party and they’ll be playing some hip hop too on Saturdays.  If you go this Saturday, tell them Fred sent you.  And don’t sleep --  you may see me back in the spot later this Fall!

Have a good one.

Rhythm & Poetry Are Universal

Despite all the mayhem occuring in our southernmost part of the country, I hope you still found time to enjoy yourselves over the Labor Day weekend.  Since there are a myriad of fundraisers and charity events happening already all over the country, I will not hit you up with any other events related the hurricane relief efforts, but I do appeal to you to give what you can -- time, money, food to help those who are in need.

I thank those of you who had an opportunity to come down and enjoy a most festive Sunday with us last week.  Being a holiday weekend, we had a bit of a late start with people filing in later in the night from family events and picnics but the party got really charged up and energetic later on with folks getting their party on and enjoying our new space.  As had happened when we first started Rhythm at 667 4 years ago, the beginning parties in a new space reflect a participation mainly from locals around the neighborhood and then, as the word gets out, the party develops with more regulars from around the city .

Our new neighborhood in Carroll Gardens/Park Slope is a much more diverse community than was 667 in Fort Greene.  Thus, we have many more different cultures represent at our new location than ever before and while the vast majority of folks had no problem dancing along with the newcomers to the Rhythm vibe, a very small few seemed to have a bit of a problem.  They left out with phrases like “there’s too many of these people or too much of that for me.”  And my response is and will always be, “New York’s a big town; I guess you need to find another venue.”  I named my party “Rhythm” because that what it’s all about – the Rhythm, the music, the dance, the letting go and the experience of good music and good company.

For the record, let it be known, Rhythm is not a Black thang, it’s not even a male thang, it’s a Rhythm Thang, first and foremost.  And while I understand the need for folks to relate and congregate with their own at times, so long as they respect our event, I cannot and will not exclude any individual or group of people to achieve that end.  Rhythm Sundays are open to all who can enjoy what we’re offering.

This Sunday I plan to launch our next installment of SPIT FIRE spoken word sessions in the early evening.  Some of you expressed a desire to do your thing on the mic and here’s your opportunity.  Our doors open at 8pm and I’d like to get the spoken word sessions going by 8:30.  While I have special guest spoken word artists coming down, all are welcome to join in, whether it be poetry, a fascinating story or testimony or singing and musical entertainment.  I look forward to seeing you this Sunday.
