MOTOWN’S VELEVELTTES EXPERIENCE CAREER RESURGENCE WITH PBS CONCERT AND RHINO RECORDS RELEASE
Kalamazoo/Flint—Legendary Motown Girl Group, The Velvelettes (Kalamazoo residents Caldin Gill-Street and Bertha Barbee-McNeal, and Flint residents Mildred Gill-Arbor and Norma Barbee-Fairhurst) will be prominently featured in two national media events. The Velvelettes are among the acts featured in the upcoming PBS concert special, “Motown: The Early Years.” Scheduled to debut during the annual August PBS Pledge Drive, the concert was taped at the Sands Hotel, in Atlantic City, on March 15. It is the latest installment in the popular “My Music” series, produced by T.J. Lubinsky and Henry DeLuca specifically for PBS. During the taping, The Velvelettes performed their two biggest hits, “Needle In A Haystack,” and “He Was Really Saying Something.,” both originally released on Motown’s VIP label in 1964. Other former Motown artists appearing with The Velvelettes on “Motown: The Early Years,” include: Gladys Horton of The Marvelettes, The Contours, The Four Tops, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, and Frances Nero. The special is hosted by Martha Reeves and Mary Wilson of The Supremes.
"One Kiss Leads To Another: Girl Group Sounds--Lost & Found" Rhino Records Box Set, scheduled for release on September 26, and featuring The Velvelettes' "Needle In A Haystack" as the lead track.
On September 27, Rhino Records will release the 4-CD box set, “One Kiss Leads To Another: Girl Group Sounds—Lost and Found.” The lead track on the lavish, 120-song set will be The Velvelettes’ “Needle In A Haystack.” Rhino Records is planning a major publicity campaign to promote the release of the set, including television, radio, and print media, as well as live concerts (including the official release party/concert at BB King’s Blues Club, in New York City, in early October). Formed in 1962, The Velvelettes signed with Motown Records later that year. The group recorded and toured until 1970, when they disbanded to devote time to raising their families. Four of the original group members—Cal, Bertha, Milly and Norma—reformed the group in 1984, for an appearance at the Concerned Professional Black Women’s Roundtable Conference. (The original fifth member of The Velvelettes, Betty Kelly, left the group in 1965, to become a member of Martha and The Vandellas.) Since 1984, The Velvelettes have toured extensively in the United States and abroad. Their recording career was revived in the early 1990s, when they recorded for the London-based Motor City Records. The Velvelettes are one of the few groups legendary groups from the 1960s still performing today with all original members. In October, 2004, The Velvelettes were honored with the prestigious “Heroes and Legends Award,” during ceremonies held in Los Angeles. Their 2004 Universal/Motown release, “The Velvelettes: The Motown Anthology,” was voted by Billboard Magazine’s Fred Bronson as one of the “Top Ten CDs of 2004.” The Velvelettes are represented as concert artists by TIngrassia Entertainment. ON TARGET TELEVISION PRESENTS A BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE TO RAY CHARLES - L.A. STYLE ON SEPTEMBER 17, 2005
Community Music Education Fundraiser to be Documented for Public Television Broadcast
Los Angeles, CA (BlackNews.com) - Dorothy Barton, producer of innovative documentaries and public television programs including On Target with Earl Ofari Hutchinson, announces the first of a series of community music education fundraisers heralding the lives and contributions of legendary African-American jazz artists.
A Birthday Tribute to Ray Charles - L.A. Style will be celebrated on September 17, 2005 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Celes and Anita King Heritage House located at 1240 S. Arlington Avenue, in Los Angeles, California. The event, to be taped for inclusion in a documentary about Los Angeles based musicians, will feature a performance by David Fathead Newman, Mr. Charles former saxophonist; and classic, spirited music of the late genius performed by the Washington High School Jazz Bands.
No newcomer to creative educational television and documentary programming, Dorothy Barton has produced such public affairs programs as On Target since 1999. Says Barton about her new music education series, "My mission is to chronicle people who have madeand are makingpositive and significant contributions to the greater Los Angeles region. This tribute to Ray Charles keeps within that framework by educating the public, particularly our youth, about his musical contributions to the worldfrom R&B to blues to jazz to country."
"This," Barton adds, "is especially important at a time when music education has been erased from public school curriculums."
David Fathead Newman, undoubtedly is a qualified teacher of the Ray Charles method, having toured with Charles band from 1954 to 1966, first as a baritone saxophonist and then as the star tenor soloist. Newman recorded his first album as a leader, Fathead: Ray Charles Presents Fathead, in 1959. That album included his famous rendition of Hard Times. Newman's latest (January 2005) release, I Remember Brother Ray, is on High Note Records.
In addition to Newman, guests will enjoy music of the Washington High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Fernando Pullum. A portion of the events proceeds will support the school's music programs. Other entertainers associated with Ray Charles and/or his works also have been invited.
Tickets for the September 17, 2005 birthday gala may be purchased for $35.00 at Celes King Bail Bond Agency, located at 1530 W. Martin Luther King Blvd., telephone number, (800) 524-0907. The admission price includes, according to Barton, a soulful dinner. Proceeds will benefit L.A.'s own Washington High School Jazz Band and On Target Television Productions, a not-for-profit California corporation.

Jermaine Dupri Strategically Brands Virgin Rap Label
Many have coined him as the Quincy Jones of today's music, both are quiet confident musical genuises. So it is no wonder that Virgin Records scrambled to try to get this musical giant on their team. As a result, Jermaine Dupri has been making powerful moves from the very start, making Virgin a competitive rap label. Everyone is now looking at Virgin to see what it can deliver. Before Virgin wasn't taken seriously. Before Virgin Records didn't quite merge with the rap genre. Virgin presented their artists on a platter. Yet the streets never really grasped or welcomed the artists as they do other rap labels. So Jermaine Dupri has spearheaded the Street Rap connection. Virgin Records now reconnects its artists to the streets with heavy weight New York Hot 97's DJ Envy and DJ Clinton Sparks. These two are the most influential DJs throughout the rap game. Shemia Miller, Rap Development Director confides, "Mr. Dupri is a rap legend and genuis. By reconnecting the artists with the streets, the Virgin Rap Label becomes believable. I mean all the artists are from the streets anyway, so it only made sense to present them to the very core of which they came from." His music colleages can tell that Jermaine Dupri is going for an industry take over. He has strategically picked the best artists representing all regions of the nation. He has an artist poised ready to attack: in the East - SunNY, in the Midwest - Mikkey, in the South - T.Waters, and in the West - Lil E. His roster can easily take down any competition: SunNY is regarded as New York's Hottest Emcee with lyrical word play and ruthless content to make the weak at heart bow out before stepping into the ring. Mikkey is Chicago's Revolutionary artist, remember Ice Cube's Death Certificate? Well that's Mikkey with a 2005 Flair, talking about politics so much that Mr. O'Reily would not want him on as a guest. Bossman from Baltimore, move over Eminem, because Bossman's "Off The Record" hit single sends shock waves throughout the industry expect a few picket rallies to surround this artist. Bossman is Baltimore's Black Howard Stern. Move over T.I., T.Waters the rawest Georgia artist to come out with a mission purpose, and New York support. The living legacy of Eazy E is now incarnated in his son Lil E, this west coast artist will remind everyone what a Boy in the hood is up against. Dem Franchize Boys, the group that has a club anthem without even an album out, is the founders of the New Crunk Movement. Each region has been chosen for total domination. Virgin Records definitely has a new movement. It's urban, it's gritty, it's guerilla, and Jermaine Dupri is not taking any prisoners. Jermaine Dupri reveals, "Before I was not in the television cameras every 5 minutes, I wasn't as visible, but this year I plan on being more visible to ensure that Virgin Rap Division does not lose. Although I am a very low key person, I am competitive, and with every ounce of my spirit, I will ensure that this label is taken seriously." Grammy Winner, Outkast's Big Boi was so confident that Mr. Dupri could run a successful label, he chose Virgin Records to be the home for the Purple Ribbon Label. Bubba Sparks, an artist on Big Boi's new label, is expected to give artists a run for their money. Celeste Watson, Sepia Networks states, "I think with Jermaine Dupri in the picture, Bubba Sparks will give Eminem a run for his money this year, now that he is off of Interscope's label". Virgin Rap Division has a new movement, a new drive, and a new sense of purpose. The purpose is to bring quality music to the masses. Shanda Sealy, CEO of Radio Promotions, Platinum Queens, adds, "The new Virgin Rap Label is a label that has authentic rappers who connect to the streets, with a track record to make even the established mainstream rappers hold tighter to their crowns." Everyone is used to Virgin mastering the R&B genre with acts such as Janet Jackson and D'Angelo, but thanks to Mr. Dupri, Virgin Records is dominating both genres - R&B and Hip Hop.

Washington, DC (BlackNews.com) - Culminating an extensive national call for submissions, BET, the Black AIDS Institute (The Institute), the Kaiser Family Foundation, and the YWCA are proud to announce the finalists in the 2nd Annual Rap-It-Up/Black AIDS Short Subject Film Competition (RIU/BASS). Ten finalists are now eligible for the next level of competition from which the winning entry will be selected. The RIU/BASS film competition seeks to highlight the issue of HIV prevention, testing, treatment and the effect of HIV/AIDS on individuals and families in the African-American, Afro-Caribbean, and/or Afro-Latin communities in the United States. In particular, the competition helps to raise awareness about the magnitude of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Black communities; encourages the public to know their status; and seeks to inspire people to take action to stop the spread of the disease. Screenwriters were encouraged to use their creativity to evoke a 'fresh' and culturally unique angle on these issues in a way that will resonate with African Americans. Numerous entries were received and reviewed by a select group of judges from across the country. The finalists are: Drew Anderson, Justin Follin, Charneice Fox and Michelle Sewell (Washington, DC), Multitude of Mercies; Michelle Lynne Coons (California), Let's Talk; Marquita Edwards (Illinois), Chances; Marcus F. Eubanks & Brandon Joseph (Arkansas), Conscious Cafe; Andrea Greer & Simone Murray (New York), Once; Charmain Johnson (Florida), Victims; Joie Lee (New York), Positive; Gregory Roberts (Illinois), The Edge Of The Looking Glass; Yasin Shabazz (Georgia), The Release Of Jackie Davis; and Lanette Ware-Bushfield (New York), Gisele and Me. "Given recent data released by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), it is clear that AIDS has reached a level that we can no longer ignore," commented Phill Wilson, Executive Director of the Black AIDS Institute. "The RIU/BASS film competition is another attempt to sound the alarm and mobilize the troops in an effort to finally put an end to this tragedy." "BET is extremely proud of both the success and impact the RIU/BASS film competition has had in depicting the extent of HIV/AIDS within the African-American community," said Kelli Lawson, BET's Executive Vice President of Corporate Marketing. "We look forward to continuing to promote HIV/AIDS awareness while also extending the unique opportunity for talented filmmakers to showcase their amazing work." "The impressive mix of powerful stories illustrates the magnitude and depth of the impact HIV/AIDS is having on African Americans throughout the U.S." said Tina Hoff, Vice President and Director of Entertainment Media Partnerships at the Kaiser Family Foundation. "HIV/AIDS clearly creates yet another hurdle for African-American women in their struggle to improve the socioeconomic outlook for themselves and their families," said Debra Roth, Director of Communication and Marketing for the YWCA USA. "As the YWCA USA works to eliminate racism and empower women, we are very conscious of any influence that stands between these women and their full potential. We hope that our sponsorship of this film contest raises awareness, detection and treatment of this disease." The winner will be announced on August 8, 2005, and the winning film will televise on the BET network around World AIDS Day (December 1, 2005). This year's RIU/BASS film competition follows a successful first year of notable awards and accolades for its two winning films, "Walking on Sunshine" and "Tangy's Song!", including the 2005 Cable Positive Award for Outstanding Film/Movie and a 2005 NAACP Image Award nomination for "Walking on Sunshine"; and a Bronze Telly Award for "Tangy's Song!". HIV/AIDS continues to devastate Black communities across the globe. It is a leading cause of death for African Americans between the ages of 25 and 44 and is the top cause of death for African-American women between the ages of 25 - 34. Although African Americans represent only 13% of the U.S. population, they accounted for approximately half (49%) of AIDS diagnosis in 2003.

Michele Lundeen
Music Style: Blues/Adult Alternative
Description: Michele Lundeen dubbed "The Queen of Steam" for her dynamic, powerful vocals and stage presence, showcases her soul-deep versatility on her debut CD "Song Inside Me". Michele blends classic & contemporary blues, funk, Memphis soul and roots rock into a tasty musical stew.
"A Soul Deep Singer" CD Liner Notes: The moment still shines through like it happened last night. Michele Lundeen is standing on the front edge of a Beale Street stage, having just unleashed one of her up-against-the-wall vocal assaults and the packed house at B.B. King's sits in stunned silence. Her hand is on her hip as her eyes prowl back and forth across the room. Still, no one moves. Michele commands attention and it's almost as if the audience knows better than to make the first move. That's the sense that comes through in this long-awaited recording by Michele. She's a soul-deep singer with a penetrating presence. Her music has a force of its own, with vocals that hit you smack dab between the eyes and knock you a few feet back. There is nothing subtle about Michele's music. She confident of what she's doing and it shows. It doesn't matter if Michele is singing country blues, mixing up some mean-street funk, locking into a Memphis groove, or launching into some high-energy blues and R&B, the music here will rub you raw. This is all by design. Michele knows that too much music today is so homogenized and filtered that it can't stand up on it's own. But she makes music that is fierce and powerful, music that reflects what's inside her. And, if you're trying to compare her style to someone, don't bother. This is pure Michele Lundeen, a singer/songwriter with an irrepressible song inside. This music can't come from anyone else." - Michael Kinsman - San Diego Blues Festival & Staff writer San Diego Union Tribune ***** "If I saw you in concert I'm sure I'd be blown away...Great voice, great look and strong writing. Very soulful. You're no doubt one talented lady! An experienced, seasoned performer with a red-hot band." say TAXI A&R reps

Submission from John Barney and the 11th Floor : musicSUBMIT.com
Band Name: John Barney and the 11th Floor Soundfile : http://johnbarney.com
Biography: John Barney and the 11th Floor originated from jam sessions in John Barney's eleventh floor oceanview condo in Long Beach, CA. Longtime guitar partner Lew Kerns, with whom Barney had played in previous bands, began focusing on vocals during this time. "Best of Days" was born out of these meetings. John wrote both the music and lyrics as well as producing. Both musicians worked in a public school during the day, John as a counselor and Lew as a vice-principal. Reina Sanchez, also a school counselor, joined soon after as the female lead vocalist. Interestingly, country singer Eric Barnes, who sang on John's previous CD "Stay the Night," worked at John's school as a security guard. John Barney has said on more than one occasion, "Take any square city block and the talent you'll find there is staggering." Eric, who sang back-up on "Best of Days" took over lead vocal chores for the live version of the band. John Bryant, son of the late country guitar legend Jimmy Bryant, was added on drums along with Patrick Ozzy Osgood on bass. John Barney began playing guitar in the eighth grade, listening to the heavy blues-based rockers like Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Jimmy Page and Johnny Winter. Although his first love was the harder bands like Deep Purple, Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, he was equally influenced by Neil Young (and CSNY) and other lyric-oriented artists and bands. His interest continued down the eclectic road, everything from female pop artists like Madonna and Tori Amos to newer bands like the Counting Crowes and Pearl Jam. A late affinity for country music also influenced his songwriting. He recorded his first CD, "Stay the Night," in 2000, resulting in a songwriting contract for his catalog of songs from the CD. However, he soon became frustrated with the "business" of songwriting and took a break from music for a couple of years. John's love of writing original music continues to drive his passion. His future plans include more live performances, writing and producing for other artists, composing for video/film and writing a novel. Lew Kerns, Reina Sanchez, Eric Barnes and Ozzy Osgood are also playing in a cover band "Assisted Living" in the Long Beach area of southern California.
Long Beach, CA August 8, 2005 - In a classic case of alter egos, two vice-principals and a high school counselor have released an energetic new rock CD bashing religious hypocrites and cable news while also poking fun at life, love, and bad bars. Songwriter/guitarist John Barney describes it as "kind of a Jekyll/Hyde type of thing. We teach your kids good citizenship during the day and then rock our butts off at night." School administrators Lew Kerns and Reina Sanchez provide the lead vocals for John Barney and the Eleventh Floor. Described by one listener as "John Mellencamp partying with Leann Rimes and a lost blues musician," the CD is the second for Barney. The "Floor" admit they stay out of trouble with the school board by not actively promoting their cd to students or parents. "But its great fun to play samples to students and watch their reaction," laughs John. "They go 'that's not you' when they hear us sing or wail on a guitar solo." The project originated out of years of jamming between Kerns and Barney, who met while attending college. "We'd play Neil Young and blues tunes until the wee hours of the morning and still manage to make class," recalls Barney. "Best of Days" combines rootsy rock with touches of country, pop and blues. John, who also produced the cd, snarls when the subject of image comes up. "Just because we're not covered in tattoos and piercings - well not all of us," he smiles, "doesn't mean our music isn't as original, emotional or authentic as anyone elses. News flash - it's okay to not drop out of school. You can still be dark." "Best of Days" is for sale or download from most major internet music retailers. DEBUT CD FROM HIGH-ENERGY MINNEAPOLIS ROCKERS BROTHER BIG BAD NOW AVAILABLE Brother Big Bad is proud to announce that their debut, self-titled CD is now available. The band has been carving out a niche in the Minneapolis music scene lately with their refreshingly upbeat and inventive style and explosive live shows. With this 6-song release, D.J. Phillips (vocals, guitar, claims to have the blues right down to his "pasty, white soul"), Andy Carroll (bass, vocals, does a mean "robot") and Matt Weaver (Drums, the guy in the smartypants glasses) showcase their top-notch skills, playful style and witty lyrics that are sure to find a huge audience among fans of earthy pop rock. The album was co-produced, mixed and mastered by Mark Brodin and is available through CD Baby. The album's first single "Insecurity" is an appealing, pop rocker that leans firmly towards Dave Matthews and Barenaked Ladies territory with its bouncy rhythm, memorable and funky guitar melody, and catchy backing harmonies. Brother Big Bad's stellar rhythm section is showcased in Unforgivable, which kicks off with a funk-drenched bass riff and drum beats before breaking into \a firey Strat solo worthy of the instrument's hallowed status. On 14 Days the boys toy with an almost tropical feel, layering hand percussion with a sea of filtered chattering voices and lyrics that tell of following the trail of a lost love down to where there's salt in the air. Like all tracks on the Brother Big Bad CD, the song is full of unique ideas and accents, the writing is undeniably catchy, and the guitar playing is a real attention-grabber. Together, their cumulative musical experiences include making the top 25 on the CMJ charts, opening for national touring act Jump Little Children in Nashville, Tenn., participating in the Cabo Wabo Battle of the Bands at the Hard Rock Cafe in Memphis, Tenn., and being invited to perform at the Midpoint Music Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio.
