Wednesday 8/3- Don't miss The Chicago Blues Reunion @ BB Kings-NYC

Don't miss Chicago Blues Reunion Live this Wednesday
August 3rd at BB King's in NYC 8PM!

Chicago Blues Reunion are blues legends Barry Goldberg, Nick Gravenites, Harvey Mandel, Tracy Nelson, Sam Lay, and Corky Siegel.  There's no question that the first wave of white Chicago musicians to take up the blues from the music's black innovators advanced the form.

These musicians (including the departed Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield) helped connect legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf to the white rock of Janis Joplin, Dylan and the Stones.  The Chicago Blues Reunion is tearing it up on the road with sold-out audiences and rave reviews of the shows.

Chicago Blues Reunion just released a new CD/DVD titled "Buried Alive in the Blues" that features a live CD plus a 90-minute DVD documentary on the Chicago blues scene with brand new interviews by BB King, Buddy Guy, and newcomer Kyle Riabko.  The CD/DVD also comes with a 32-page picture book that's worth the price of admission.  "Buried Alive in the Blues" debuted at #3 on the Billboard blues chart and is holding steady in this slot plus recently got a 4 out-of 4 star review from the Chicago Sun Times.

This live show, recorded in Chicago last October, is a celebration of that scene. It finds Barry Goldberg, Harvey Mandel, Nick Gravenites, Corky Siegel, Sam Lay and Tracy Nelson in fine playing and singing form. "Born in Chicago" is a gritty autobiographical spin by Gravenites that originally kicked off the first Paul Butterfield Blues Band album. The title track was written by Gravenites for Janis Joplin, who died the day before she was scheduled to record the vocals. "Left Handed Soul" has to be one of the most creative odes to devil-worship ever.

LONNIE LISTON SMITH
Thursday, August 11 - 9:30

When Lonnie Liston Smith made the transition from sideman to leader in 1973, it was the beginning of a fusion /crossover /post-bop band he dubbed Lonnie Liston Smith & the Cosmic Echoes. It was on April 24, 1973, that Smith recorded Astral Traveling and led his first Cosmic Echoes lineup, which included George Barron (soprano/tenor sax), Joe Beck (guitar), Cecil McBee (bass), David Lee Jr. (drums), James Mtume (percussion), Sonny Morgan (percussion), Badal Roy (tablas), and Geeta Vashi (tamboura). From 1974 on, the Cosmic Echoes' albums were typically about 80% instrumental, but included a few vocal offerings. Astral Travelling's instrumental fusion combined those post-bop influences with funk, pop, and rock, and some of their best-known vocal numbers. One of songs that Smith's Cosmic Echoes recorded for Doctor Jazz was the urban/quiet storm vocal number "Never Too Late," which was released as a single and became a hit. In the mid-'80s, the Cosmic Echoes unofficially called it quits, but Lonnie (who turned 60 in 2000) returned to a Cosmic Echoes -minded approach in 1998, when he was reunited with his brother Donald and featured him on the album Transformation (which came out on Smith's own label Loveland Records).

THE AVETT BROTHERS
Saturday, August 13 - 9:30

"The Avett Brothers could easily be classified as Pre-Civil War Modern Rock. What else to call the young trio's distinctive, nearly transcendent brand of pop melodies played at punk tempos on banjo, acoustic guitar and upright bass? The Avetts brought to mind the image of Robert E. Lee singing for the Ramones." -Washington Post. The Avett Brothers simply call it Piedmont Stomp & Roll.

MARTY STUART
Marty Stuart is country music's Renaissance man. He has scored six top-ten hits, one platinum and five gold albums, and four Grammy Awards. But his success proves the difficulty of gauging a career in charts alone. He has made lasting music as a front man and in collaboration with virtually every major roots music figure of his era, from Lester Flatt to Bob Dylan. Stuart has produced records for some of the most distinguished artists working today, and many famous names have chosen to record his songs. His energetic enthusiasm has gone outside music, yielding impressive work as a photographer, writer, collector and arts executive. Keen to broaden the scope of his life-long passion to uncover the depths and eccentricities of Southern culture, Stuart has launched his own label, Superlatone, with partner Universal South Records. The kickoff release is "Souls' Chapel" a Mississippi Delta-drenched, stripped down front-porch gospel record out August 30th.

JAY RODRIGUEZ'S SOUL SONIC ENSEMBLE  featuring the MEMBERS OF GROOVE COLLECTIVE
Prolific. Prodigal. Profound. That is Jay Rodriguez. Sometimes the sound is explosive, wild and full of fury, other times his music aches with a passion that's painful and bare. Always modest and reverent, Rodriguez harnesses the unbridled audacity of youth and melds it with the uncanny discipline of a hardened New York jazz veteran. Married to the song while sleeping with the groove, his sound sings of commitment to an ideal-it is spontaneity, culturally untethered and unpretentious, the excitement of far flung love at all costs. It is perfectionism kissed by chaos." - Michael Gelfand  Tonight Jay is joined by members of Groove Collective a crew of New York City-based stylistic adventurers laying down grooves that buzz with funk, jazz, house, Latin and every party-inducing sound in between, and many others.

Gomez, who recently released her new album CANTOS DE AGUA on Chesky Records, can also be heard on the recent Putumayo release WOMEN OF LATIN AMERICA. Additionally, Marta is a Billboard Nominee as best latin jazz artist of the year. "...a pure-voiced folk traditionalist and jazzy pop adventurer at the same time." -Boston Herald

REBBESOUL:  Havdallah Concert
RebbeSoul is world beat and Jewish roots music on the cutting edge. A versatile musician with an innate gift for telling a story, RebbeSoul brings a new voice to the sometimes-stagnant realm of Jewish music.  His records have struck a chord with young and old listeners alike, bringing his latest release to #1 on the CMJ (college radio) world music charts.  He blends rock sensibilities, world-fusion stylings and traditional Hebrew  melodies to create a sound that is ageless yet completely progressive. Havdallah is a ritual on Saturday nights that marks the end of Shabbat  or Sabbath and the beginning of the new week ahead. The word Havdallah  means separation in Hebrew and signifies the difference between the holy and the everyday. For this spacial concert, RebbeSoul lights a braided candle on stage, and then plays Middle Eastern, Mizrachi style grooves. The prayers are chanted over the grooves, frequently with special guest singers or Chazans. Spices are passed around through the audience as part of the ceremony as the music intensifies. It concludes by extinguishing the candle in a glass of wine. "His compositions take acoustic rock into a mystical realm" - Playboy

RIVERS RUTHERFORD / STEVE MCEWAN
Rivers Rutherford is one of a small, select group of "A" list Nashville songwriters whose songs are selling millions of records for some of country music's top artists:  Tim McGraw, Gretchen Wilson, Montgomery Gentry, Brooks & Dunn and Faith Hill among them.  With five #1's to his credit, Rivers is also the recipient of the ASCAP Song of the Year Award of 2000.  Perhaps a little too raw, real and rockin' to snag a deal for himself on a Nashville major label, Rivers is definitely not an acid-washed jeans hat act.
Steve McEwan , lead singer and songwriter of cult band UnAmerican , has opened for The Who and Neil Young on major tours , written hits for Kenny Chesney (Young) , Brooks & Dunn (That's What Its All About) and also had songs recorded by Faith Hill (If This Is The End , Wicked , Alive) and Tim McGraw ('My Old Friend' from his latest multi platinum album "Live Like You Were Dying"). Steve now lives in New York.

MARY LEE'S CORVETTE with special guest ERIC HUTCHINSON:  Presented in Association with HOWL Festival of East Village Arts
Mary Lee's Corvette is headed by gifted singer/songwriter'/guitarist Mary Lee Kortes, who has been called "one of the most compelling voices in modern rock."  (NY Post)    In 2002, Mary Lee's Corvette scored a surprise hit with Blood on the Tracks, a typically fearless song-for-song reinterpretation of Bob Dylan's 1975 classic of the same name. While the Dylan-inspired disc helped to substantially expand Mary Lee's Corvette's audience, longtime observers recognized the irony, since it's the artfully crafted, deeply felt original compositions of Mary Lee Kortes-MLC's founder, lead singer and sole charter member-that have long been the band's calling card. Indeed, Kortes' original songs survey thorny emotional territory with depth and nuance, as well as a classic pop sensibility that lends buoyancy to her lyrics' darker insights "A moving and nuanced feast for lovers of great songwriting that thrives in live performance for its wit, insight, and glowing humanity." - Billboard
Eric Hutchinson's acoustic pop is filled with strong melodies and humor. "A deliciously lo-fi antidote to the slickly facile, overproduced jingles glutting the market. Balancing a lyrical pop-acoustic sensibility with subtle levity, this songwriter's unpretentious manner challenges the listener to reject high production values in favor of (gasp) song- craft.  A quick wit and natural comedic proclivity infuse his set with a buoyancy usually absent from brooding singer-songwriter types." --LA WEEKLY

This new record was mixed by Don Fleming (Sonic Youth, Pete Yorn) and features sharply crafted songs, naked aggression, soulful rock singing, superb songwriting, guitars and more guitars.  Statland has also written and directed his own music film, "Low Flame," and has written music for film with Philip Glass.  "Angry, sometimes even enraged, the raunchy, simplified clang of NYCSmoke is the liberating sound of a liberated man." -The Aquarian

DOVEMAN:  The Acrobat CD Release
Thursday, August 4 at 7:30
Doveman plays lamp rock and insomnia pop, drawing deeply from downtown jazz, new classical, slowcore, debonair '60's pop and ambient music to create an unusual and delicate sound that The New York Press says "evokes that rare moment when nostalgia and sadness meet love".  Doveman's debut record, The Acrobat, is reminiscent of downbeat masters of melancholy like Nick Drake, Before and After Science-era Eno and the latter day Talk Talk and the music has the unmistakable ring of pre-dawn loneliness, as intimate as it is forlorn.

Special Guest: Birdie Busch
The music of Birdie Busch is natural. There isn't pretense, nothing forced or processed, just delicate melodies and deceptively simple lyrics that resonate upon further discovery. Birdie just finished her first studio recording in the spring of 2005 entitled The Ways We Try. With radio play from WXPN, and the song "South Philly" just included on the station's new WXPN Philly Local-Right On Track album, the media support is taking her and her band into the best clubs and halls in the city.

SPIN DOCTORS WITH TOWNHALL

You may remember the pseudo-hippie, jam-oriented blues rocking Spin Doctors from New York during the early '90s. They made it big with hits like "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong", "Two Princes" and covers such as Creedence Clearwater's classic "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?".

The original Spin Doctors are putting out their most musically accomplished album to date — a mature work that sums up their individual artistic growth over the past decade. Nice Talking To Me (set for release on September 13th) is the end product of a three-year period during which the band renewed their dedication to songwriting, live performance, and the creative process.

"With so much great music coming out of Philly, it's fitting that Townhall is leading the pack. Great songs, great new musical ideas and an infectious reaction from our listeners similar to the 'big names' we play. 'Confusion' sounds fantastic on the air. It's as good if not better than many of the new songs we're currently playing." - Bruce Warren, WXPN 88.5

hotel cafÉ tour

The Hotel Café is proud to announce the launch of its first national tour and will stop at World Cafe Live on Saturday, September 17. The Hotel Café, once just a small Los Angeles coffee shop, has quickly blossomed into not only the premier singer/songwriter venues in the United States. On any given night, you can find well known artists (such as: Weezer, Ray LaMontagne, Jason Mraz, Rilo Kiley) on the same bill with up-and-comers, jamming into the wee hours of the morning.

Singer/songwriter Tom McRae credits his upbringing for leading him to a career in music. While growing up in Chelmsford, near Suffolk, his parents were vicars in the Church of England and McRae sang in the choir. Tom McRae's confessional self-titled debut appeared in fall 2001 and earned him comparisons to Nick Drake and Bob Dylan. - AMG

KT Tunstall is a sparkling new songwriter with Chinese blood, a Scottish heart, great legwarmers and a cool name - KT celebrates classic singer-songwriting in the tradition of Rikki Lee Jones, Carol King and Fleetwood Mac with an articulate, accessible, immediate brew of rootsy sass, wistful quandary and after-hours atmosphere.

"Alongside artists like Pete Yorn, (Cary Brothers is) one of the emerging acoustic talents in Los Angeles... If he'd been old enough in the late 60's, the singer/songwriter probably would've grabbed a few rounds with a young David Crosby or shared a smoke with Joni Mitchell after an appearance together at a local coffeehouse...” - Billboard

"Joshua Radin is an up and coming songwriter who creates strong melodies with well-defined moods." - Peter Gabriel

GREY EYE GLANCES
A folk-rock unit in the mold of such classic examples as Fairport Convention or Renaissance, Grey Eye Glances formed in New Jersey early in the '90s around vocalist/guitarist Jennifer Nobel, keyboard player/vocalist Dwayne Keith and bassist Eric O'Dell. The trio released the eight-song mini-LP Songs of Leaving in May 1993 to sell at shows (on their own JED Records) and followed up with Further On... one year later. Grey Eye Glances signed to Parachute/Mercury, and released their major-label debut Eventide in 1997. A Little Voodoo (2002) is their latest album and Grey Eye Glances Live is their latest release.

THE FAME TO PLAY NYC RESIDENCY AT PIANOS IN SEPTEMBER

THE FAME TO PLAY NYC RESIDENCY IN SEPTEMBER;
CMJ SHOWCASE ANNOUNCED

New York, NY – Five weeks of THE FAME. That's what New York City will
get during the month of September when the rising New York City rock
group performs every Thursday night at Pianos (158 Ludlow Street.)
Fans will get five opportunities to catch THE FAME live after the band
spent much of the summer working on new songs and playing outside of
New York. These will be the band's last area appearances before
hitting the road again in October.

"I think people are ready for something different," explains lead
vocalist and songwriter Reno Bo. "What The Fame does isn't typical of
what people expect from a New York band. We write three-minute songs
with big choruses, harmonies and guitar solos, which is hardly what is
going on in New York right now. That's the way we like it. You can
come to one of our shows and be surprised by what you hear."

With Get On The Beat, THE FAME delivers a fantastic collection of six
solid arena rock anthems – a blazing introduction to the band's knack
for marrying a good tune to a driving beat. The EP is packed with
infectious rock and roll brimming with sing-a-long choruses, foot
tapping backbeats, three-part harmonies and hooks at every turn.

Combining classic song craft with the scope of late 70's radio rock (a
la early Tom Petty, The Cars, Cheap Trick) THE FAME's upbeat,
hook-heavy style and widespread appeal has caught the ears of fans and
media across the country. The group self-released their debut EP Get
On The Beat in March 2005 and organized a two-month U.S. tour to
promote it.

Ex-Sex Pistol Steve Jones discovered the unsigned band
during their April 2005 residency in L.A. and began spinning tracks
from the disc on his Indie 103.1 FM radio show "Jonesy's Jukebox."
Write-ups followed in The Village Voice, New York Magazine and New
York Press, championing the NYC band's 'refreshingly un-New York'
sound.

"We treat every song we write as if it's a single," says Bo of the
band's writing philosophy. "It's all about memorable tunes you can
sing along to. All of the great music we like has those elements. We
make music you can speed down highways to and start parties with.
That's what rock and roll is about."

In addition to the Pianos residency, THE FAME will play as part of
SESAC's CMJ New Music Marathon showcase at The Delancey (168 Delancey
at Clinton) on Thursday September 15. The band will then spend October
and November touring the U.S.

Details:

THE FAME – September Residency
Thursday Sept. 1, 8, 23, & 29 at 9:30 pm; Sept. 15 at 1 am
Pianos (158 Ludlow Street, New York, NY)

"The hard-rocking Fame, whose un-self-conscious party anthems are
perfect boom-box-atthe-barbecue fodder, are slowly infiltrating the
mainstream" - New York Magazine

"Their sound is refreshing right now when everyone else is trying to
be the next Franz and Killers." -The Gothamist

"They are the true spirit of all-American greatness in a city where
un-American rock acts have become the norm." -New York Press

"[The Fame] play their powerpop with more power (and hence more pop)
than any such combo to emerge from NYC in eons." - Village Voice
