Herkimer Square Block Party
On Saturday, August 6, 2005, the Herkimer Square Community Block Association held their annual block party & a great time was had by all. The food & drink was plentiful & the smell of Barbecue grilling, had my stomach begging for food. I enjoyed the camaraderie & the residents of Herkimer Square showed that the residents of Brownsville know how to come together in the spirit of fun. There were people hustling, lovers of "True" school music dancing to everything from The Staple Singers, Motown, to Jackie Wilson And, of course, no GOOD block party is a block party without The Electric & Cha-Cha Slide! The children were treated to games & free face & arm paintings, courtesy of D-Cross of Cross Dimensions. If you need these types of services, contact him at: Andre & his KISS-FM van was there, challenging willing contestants with a series of musical & general questions in exchange for various prizes. Andre even consoled a young man who was crying & gave him a couple of T-shirts, thereby turning his tears into a great big smile. What would a block party be, without our elected officials stopping by to pay their respects? Joining in the festivities were Assemblyman William F. Boyland Jr. & Council Member, Tracy Boyland. City Council Candidate. Also in attendance were: Alicka Ampry-Samuel (The youngest elected member of the N.Y.S. Democratic Committee at the age of 24), her motheractivist & former County Committee member & current member of Community Board 16, Ernestine Turner & B.M. Marcus, who at the age of 26, was the youngest Block Association President in Midwood Gardens. The President of The Herkimer Square Community Block Association is Mrs. Mary Fortune. Mrs. Fortune expressed great pride in her Block Association, which is bordered from Saratoga & Howard Avenues. She is proud of the strides that the association has made in the last few years & she sees a marked difference in her block. There is an improved attitude & camraderie, the last few years since the association was formed. Long-time resident, Winfield McClellan agreed with Mrs. Fortune's assessment. This was a very enjoyable & positive gathering & I look forward to bringing you stories of their next gatherings!

Fathers' Day In The 'Ville - 2005
On Sunday, June 19th, the annual Fathers' Day Cookout was held at the I.S. 55 schoolyard. As always, there was plenty of food & drink & when I say plenty of food, I mean PLENTY of food!! With Earl, Butch & Joy manning the grill, huge portions of ribs, franks & burgers, were in abundant supply. You can smell that food for blocks & just thinking about it is making me fiend for some of that food! Every year many of the folks from back in the day, come back to celebrate life & to reminisce about the good old days. There was non-stop music, spinning everything from 50 Cent to The O'Jays & the variety of sounds was all good. As always, they do it right & whether your a new-jack, or an familiar face from the distant past, everyone receives love. Long-time residents like The Majors', The Thomases, The Smallwoods', Beaver & too many to name, are always there to make sure that everyone has a good time. And for the past dozen or so Fathers' Days', Brownsville celebrates that old school unity, that's been missing for far too long. Of course, as we're talking about Brownsville, there's definitely some B-Ball on tap. We were treated to several games of Basketball, with the brothers displaying their best moves & some fierce power dunks. The only thing that I miss are the Softball games & we used to have some damn good ones. Needless to say, it's always good to see & old friends get together in unity & I look forward to next years' annual Fathers' Day celebration.
